Why I Choose Organic, By Corey Tufts, Owner/Founder, Golden Gate Organics

For me, going organic wasn’t about GMO’s or synthetic pesticides. It wasn’t about better taste and higher quality food. I chose organic because its sustainable and ethical.

Organic farmers don’t spray their crops with synthetic fertilizers which would be much cheaper and easier. Instead, they rotate their crops. This requires more labor and is more expensive up-front but it prevents fertilizer runoff that causes toxic algae blooms. Did you know that last summer nearly half a million people in Toledo, OH could not consumer their tap water because of a toxic algae bloom caused by industrial agriculture runoff? What if that happened here in the Bay Area?

I choose organic meat, eggs, and milk because the animals are raised humanely and ethically. Organically raised animals are not fed hormones and steroids to make them artificially bigger, or harmful antibiotics which are passed on to whomever consumes them. These animals eat organic food, or as your grandparents called it; food.

Once upon a time all food was organic and right now there are too many people counting calories and not enough people counting chemicals. Every time you buy organic you’re persuading more farmers and ranchers to grow organic. Stop waiting for Friday, for spring, or summer to begin eating healthy. Good health is achieved when you stop waiting for it and make the most of the moment you are in now. A healthy person is a happy person.

Remember one thing: You are what you eat. Your body makes new cells from the food you eat. What you eat literally becomes you. You have a choice of what you’re made of.

Stop asking why organic food is so expensive and start asking why conventional food is so cheap? Aren’t you and your family worth it?
