Geography Lesson
In the January/February 2006 issue, my wife and I enjoyed Alice Kaufman’s description of the Choate cottage on the banks of Temsecal Creek.
We were puzzled, however, by the author’s placing the cottage in the Temescal neighborhood. A comparison between the house address in the photograph and the Oakland telephone directory, plus a walk that we took this morning, confirmed that the cottage is located in the Montclair area, miles away from 51st Street and Telegraph Avenue.
Although it may no longer be fashionable for journalists to get such details right, it would give your magazine more credibility as a showcase for Oakland if you did.

Late Date
I received my copy of the January/ February 2006 Oakland Magazine on Jan. 23. I know there is no problem with my particular post office or mail carrier, since I receive The New Yorker magazine every week in a timely fashion. I am truly wondering what is up? Of the 31 calendar entries for this month, eight were past. I think it might be time to get your act together, since this is year three of publication. I enjoy reading about Oakland, the city I have lived in on and off since 1952. But if your magazine is going to continue to be so dysfunctional, I will think twice about renewing my subscription next year. Yes, I have already renewed—you seem to be incredibly quick about renewals, just not about production.
Please do whatever you need to do to keep your fans happy. I am not the only disgruntled subscriber!

Ed Note: The issue should hit mailboxes during the first week of our monthly publication date, but we pushed out publication dates for our January/February and March/April issues, and the holidays proved taxing for our printer. We’ll be more vigilant about calendar items in those issues in 2007.
Outdated Info?
I’m not sure where you got your information for the Physicians’ Directory in your East Bay Medical Guide, but it is extremely outdated. I see two doctors listed there who have been dead at least four or five years (ophthalmologists George F. Hilton and George J. Nitz Jr.). Those are just doctors I know. Makes me wonder about the validity of the rest of the list.

Ed Note: Alameda Publishing Group devoted company resources to develop a proprietary listing of physicians from existing SBC telephone listings and other sources to produce the Physicians’ Directory, a part of the East Bay Medical Guide. Correction
The Choate cottage, as the letter writer above notes, is indeed in Montclair, not Temescal, as identified in the home tour article “A Creek Runs Through It” in our last issue. Oakland Magazine sincerely regrets the error.
