• The City of Oakland's Office of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with City Year, T-Mobile, the Department of Human Services, the Oakland Police Department, the Oakland Black Firefighters Association, and Public Works Agency will renovate Manzanita Recreation Center on Friday, Feb. 29, from 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Renovations and upgrades to the center include interior and exterior paint, as well as major improvements to the game room, restrooms, entrance way, computer room, gymnasium and outside play areas. OPR's Manzanita Recreation Center was selected as an improvement project site by T-Mobile in partnership with City Year. A 1959 graduate of Alameda High School, John Shaterian has spent the past decade ferrying important papers and mail between various city offices. His work took him from Alameda Point to Bay Farm Island and all points in between on his 72-mile daily route. It’s work the 65-year-old enjoyed. Shaterian was fired Jan. 14, the Alameda Sun reported, after he was assigned a new vehicle, one he didn’t feel was safe. The annual Girl Scouts Cookie Sale is back and this year more than 30,000 Girl Scouts, under the newly formed Girl Scouts of Northern California council, will participate in the Cookie Program. On February 25, Girl Scouts launched its latest feature to the cookie sale—the online Cookie Booth Finder—now it is even easier to find a cookie booth in your community. Mayor Ron Dellums' plan to use $7.7 million from the city's 2004 public-safety ballot measure, Measure Y, to boost police department recruiting and training drew the opposition Monday of a residents' Measure Y Oversight Committee, the Oakland Tribune reported today. Committee members said using the money for the entirety of Dellums' proposals would be imprudent. High winds in the East Bay blew a Marine Corps A-4 Skyhawk jet off its pedestal in Alameda Point early Sunday morning, the Oakland Tribune reported today. The National Weather Service in Monterey confirmed winds of 41 miles per hour at the Oakland airport early Sunday morning. It also reported up to 1.5 inches of rain in areas such as San Rafael. "The winds weren't large-scale enough to be severely impacting like other storms can be," National Weather Service meteorologist Rick Canepa said. In a concentrated effort to keep the city of Oakland traffic safe and respond to pothole complaints, Public Works Agency crews will start a citywide pothole-filling blitz this week. The pothole blitz will be a three-month effort, one week each in February, March and April. Public Works crews will focus in a different geographical service area for each blitz, in order to make a tangible impact.
