Bike to Work/Spare the Air

Here is a look at numerous events on this very HOT Thursday.

• Choose a healthy commute during Oakland’s 15th annual bike to work day May 15, part of Bay Area bike to work day. Bicycling to work combines transportation and recreation that is both convenient and sustainable. Start your day off right and pedal to Frank Ogawa Plaza for coffee, all-day valet bike parking, mini tune-ups and other goodies. Free, Frank Ogawa Plaza, 14th Street and Broadway, visit www.oaklandbikes.info/btwd or www.bayareabikes.org/btwd/index.php for more information.

• The Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced yesterday that today is a Spare the Air day and that concentrations of ground-level ozone pollution are forecast to be unhealthy. The district says that clear skies, hot temperatures and light winds are to blame. The public is encouraged to work at home, take public transit (which is not free), carpool or ... ride a bike (see above).

• The Berkeley-based Impact Fund: Strategic Litigation for Social Justice is celebrating 15 years with a gala event tonight in San Francisco. Tonight's event honors the New Mexico Environmental Law Center and singer and activist Holly Near. 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m., May 15, Westin St. Francis Hotel, 335 Powell St., San Francisco, (510) 845-3473, ext. 314.

Oakland Asian Students Education Services announced that it is celebrating its 25th anniversary tonight. ABC-TV reporter Alan Wang will emcee. 6 p.m.–8:30 p.m., May 15, $50, $20 students, Oakland Asian Cultural Center, 388 Ninth Street.

Covenant with Youth Gala: Join Covenant House California tonight as they honor the contributions of developer Phil Tagami, the Give Something Back foundation and Ella Baker Center founder Van Jones. This special event will also raise funds for Covenant House California’s efforts to help homeless youth. 5:30 p.m., May 15, $150, Oakland Rotunda Building, 300 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, contact Jill Kunishima at (510) 379-1010, ext. 1006.

The Phenomenauts

The Phenomenauts are West Oakland's favorite travelers from the future and they have been hard at work at the Command Center recently, releasing a new album early this year entitled For All Mankind. Check out this track from these local Galaga fanatics.
